On election night, Doug Jones said there had been 1,200,000 phone calls and 300,000 door knocks.

The article reported that 1500 national Indivisible volunteers sent 242,400 texts to likely Democrat voters in Alabama, reminding them to vote

I promoted #Tweets2ALVoters4DougJones. I was unsuccessful in that and very few such tweets were sent.

I am sure many in Indivisible are strategizing about what to do next in their Trump resistance and how to do it.

I think the most effective thing to do in the Trump resistance is to endeavor to peel away his support by means of messaging to them that (i) Trump lied to them and conned them in his election campaign, (ii) Trump's health care and tax cut ideas and actions are the leading examples that show Trump conned his voters in the election, (iii) Trump continues to lie to his voters that his health care and tax cuts are furthering what he promised them in the election campaign, and (iv) the Trump voters need to see that Trump has conned them.

If that messaging can be effectively communicated to the Trump voters, the object is that they will turn on Trump and take it out on Congressional Republicans in the 2018 elections.

The effectiveness of this approach can be increased by making Congressional Republicans aware that the messaging is going on. The Congressional Republicans are complicit in Trump's lying about his health care proposal and tax cuts plan. The longer they are complicit, the greater the retribution will potentially be against them next November.

I am trying to do the foregoing messaging in the Alabama 6th Congressional district where I live. See Gary Palmer review. I am doing my messaging by means of my blog and a lot of direct tweeting to voters in my district. I am interested in other people helping me out in the messaging I am trying to do.

If others around the country think what I am doing is a good idea, I hope they will find ways to do the same where they live.

I am doing so because I consider myself a middle of the roader who is distraught by the extreme polarization and hyperpartisanship that is impairing the decent functioning of Congress and our government for the American people.

In all honesty, I think Donald Trump is horrendously divisive for the country, and for Tommy Tuberville to be elected as Senator from Alabama would only add to the culture war that is tearing the country apart.

I have no idea about your political beliefs, and I am sure there is much you and I would disagree about. I only wish for us and for our Congress to do a better job in working together to try to solve the country's huge problems.

What you basically need to do is find an Alabama Twitter account with followers you want to send tweets to, compose a tweet message you wish to send to those followers, and start tweeting.

Blanketing AL twitter accounts gives instructions about how to tweet efficiently on a laptop. I don't use a cellphone to send tweets, so I don't know how efficiently it can be done on a cellphone.

Perhaps what Trump has tweeted about the rally will inspire you on what you want to tweet in your #Tweets2ALVoters4DougJones.

This is to push for Doug Jones supporters to "blanket" Alabama twitter accounts with pro-Doug tweets during the next six days.

I can't "blanket" Alabama twitter accounts by myself, but I am doing tweeting that illustrates how this can be done.

If you scroll through my Tweets & replies, you will see a large number of individually addressed tweets that say as follows:

To find persons in Alabama to send my tweets to, I have used follower lists of other Twitter accounts. In sending my tweets thus far, I have used these follower lists:  https://twitter.com/IndivisibleALD6/followers; https://twitter.com/huntsvillealcoc/following; https://twitter.com/GuntersvilleCoC/followers

For my tweets, I included Will Slaughter's tweet for its substance, and also because he is a native of Alabama, and his father is Bill Slaughter, who lives in Mountain Brook, was once in the Alabama House of Representatives as a Republican, to my knowledge continues a Republican, and is a prominent name in Alabama.

I sent my tweets using a laptop. Except for the addressee, the tweets I sent were all the same.

I did my tweeting by getting the tweet message on my mouse clipboard, and then, starting with the first person on the follower list I was using (e.g. https://twitter.com/IndivisibleALD6/followers ), I did as follows:
1. Right click on person's Twitter name.
2. Choose "open in new tab"
3. Go to the new tab.
4. Click on the "Tweet to" button.
5. Paste the tweet message in the box.
6. Hit the "Tweet" button.
7. Close the tab, which takes you back to the list
8. Go on to next person, and repeat above steps.

I limited myself mainly to persons on the follower list who showed they lived in Alabama. When I went to the new tab in Step 3 above, I could decide whether I wanted to send a tweet. If I decided not to send a tweet, I skipped to Step 7 and proceeded from there.

Tweeting as described above, it is fairly easy  to send 35 to 70 tweets in a half hour.

I have never tweeted using a cellphone, and I don't know whether similar efficient sending of tweets can be done on a cellphone. I am interested in learning how well a cellphone works for doing the above described tweeting.

Depending how many Doug Jones supporters will do the above kind of tweeting, hundreds of thousands of tweets can be sent to Alabama voters in the next six days.

All Doug Jones volunteers need to do is pick a Twitter account follower list they want to tweet to, compose the tweet message they want to send, and start tweeting.

If you tweet, consider telling other tweeters about your tweeting, by sending a "general" tweet that says what follower list you used, your tweet message, and about how many tweets you sent. I suggest you tweet use the hashtags  #DougJonesForSenate and #Tweets2ALVoters4DougJones.

Your tweet might say something like, "Dear AL voter: Please forgive me as an out of stater tweeting to you about your Senate election, but please read http://dougjones4senate.blogspot.com/2017/12/out-of-stater-tweet.html. Thank you."

There will be randomness to your selecting an Alabama Twitter account follower list to send tweets to and it will be random whom you send your tweets to. At this late stage, you just have to get to it.

Let's make a deal for sending tweets to AL voters in your city or town.

Here's what you need to do.

First, find a Twitter account in your geographical area that has followers that you think would be worthwhile for me to send tweets to in support of Doug Jones. The Twitter account could be that of the high school in your area, or the Twitter account of your local chamber of commerce, or the Twitter account of your city or town which has a good list of followers, or some other Twitter account that would have lots of people in your city or town as followers.

Then pick a tweet from the below list that you would like me to send to the followers of the Twitter account you have selected.

1.  Help save AL from Roy Moore by tweeting to get out the vote for DougJones in [name of your city or town to be unserted].https://dougjones4senate.blogspot.com/2017/09/jones-gotv.html

I will then proceed to send tweets to persons on the follower list. I will tell you how many tweets I have sent, and how many page views of the link in the tweet resulted from recipients clicking on the link.

I will also report that information on the #DougJonesForSenate hashtag.

I am trying to pin down whether the above is "texting [to AL voters] for Doug Jones", or whether it is to receive GOTV instructional texts from the campaign.

Whichever it is, I think all of texting, tweeting banks and emailing campaign can be pursued and provide mutual support. For example, if the texting is "texting [to ALvoters]," a special tweeting bank can be used to solicit texters.

Much depends on what the Doug Jones campaign wants to encourage, and what Doug Jones volunteers are willing to do in form of texting, tweet banking, and emailing.

Someone tweeted to me this: 

It’s a texting bank much like phone banking. You go to the Indivisible link and sign up. They give you an account and on the day you sign up for, you get texting assignments sent to your acct. at least that’s what I think. Never done it before.

SPURRING PARTICIPATION IN ALL OF THIS: I don't know how the campaign is using FB to spur volunteer efforts. Canvassers and postcard senders have tweeted using #DougJonesForSenate and possibly other hashtags to report about canvassing they have done and postcards they have sent. This reporting probably spurs other volunteers. I don't know what reporting of the texting effort will be done. If Doug Jones volunteers start sending tweets to Alabama voters or start sending emails to Alabama voters, they can report by tweeting on Twitter the tweeting they have done or the emailing they have done..

ORGANIZING ANY OR ALL OF THIS: Any or all of this needs organizing for effectiveness. There appears to be non-campaign organizing of texting and postcarding. I can't tell whether the campaign is involved in the organizing of texting or postcarding. I have been unable to get the campaign interested in tweet banking. The emailing idea has been added only recently in this blog. If the campaign is not going to be involved in organizing, any organizing has to come from outside the campaign. For the campaign not to be involved in organizing seems disadvantageous.

Where tweeting banks stand
There are sixteen days left before December 12th.

I am not privy to any Doug Jones campaign strategizing for these final two weeks. I have no idea what the campaign may be thinking about to "pull out all the stops."

I have been unable to get the campaign's attention to the tweeting banks advocated in this blog. I don't know whether campaign resources are so stretched that attention cannot be given to everything deserving of attention, or whether the campaign has concluded that the tweeting banks I am advocating are not sufficiently beneficial to justify any campaign resources and volunteer time and effort being used for tweet banking.

On the tweeting banks, there is an issue that some may view the tweeting as spam. If any say the tweeting should not be done because it is spam, I disagree. More than a year ago, I submitted the tweeting method to Twitter and gave my justifications for it. See Twitter@Support. I have been using the tweeting method for more than a year, and I have not had a problem with Twitter. I have sent tens of thousands of individually directed tweets, and the number of recipients who have complained is probably less than 25.

Because the Twitter platform is under the control of one entity (i.e., Twitter), and Twitter can ban abusers from communicating via the Twitter platform, I think people's sensibilities about spam on Twitter are less than in the email universe, in which there is not a single entity in control of the email platform and banning abusers can be very difficult, if not impossible.

Using email to pull out all the stops
I have been pushing tweeting banks for  Doug Jones for three months. I have not gotten them going with Doug Jones tweeters, and I have not been able to get the Doug Jones campaign to take an interest.

Thus it may be ridiculous to suggest now using email to "pull out all the stops" in the final two weeks, but I will make the suggestion anyway.

In suggesting email I think it is true, as mentioned above, that there is much heightened sensitivity about spam in the email universe compared to Twitter, and recipients of email are likely to object more quickly than in the case of a tweet.

Both tweeting banks and an email campaign come down to how much Doug Jones and his supporters want to win, what he and they think will help (or help more than hurt) in winning, and what time and efforts he and they are willing to dedicate to what activities to try to win.

I will continue to push tweeting banks. If anyone wants to consider adding an email component to their campaign efforts, and would like to discuss the same, please join the Google group I have created and we can discuss the same.

Postcarding
The postcarding effort of volunteers sending postcards to Alabama voters has been going on for several weeks, and postcard sending is reported daily on Twitter. If you want to take up postcarding, go to Local AL Twitter addresses to get information about what to do.

Over the past year and a half, I have had good experience with individually directed tweet that contain a link and the link getting clicked on. Perhaps an individual tweet shows personal attention that gets responded to by clicking on the link.

You can experiment for yourself by creating a webpage to link to and that has a page view counter, proceed to send individual tweets, and see what your page view counter shows. If you want to use one of my blog entries to link to, and you tell me that you are sending individual tweets, I can report to you the page viewing that I see on my blog page view counter.

How to organize?

I have been trying to push this blog for three months.

Organizing requires #DougJonesForSenate tweeters who are willing to tweet.

So, a first step a person can do is to urge other tweeters to decide to do the tweeting urged in this blog.

Tell them to join the Google group to discuss tweeting, ask questions, and get information.

If you want a particular new tweeting bank organized, you can suggest messaging to put in the tweeting bank, or I will draft something for your consideration. See Index of tweeting banks.

Simplifying this

The tweeting banks I have created seek to state a reason for voting for Doug Jones, and the tweets give a link to a webpage for the recipient to click on, which link elaborates on the reason for voting for Doug Jones. The linked webpage further invites recipients to join in the tweeting. The method  gives importance to tweet recipients clicking on the links and keeping track of page views to establish that links are being clicked on.

Simplification may be called for at this juncture.

There is an active postcard sending effort going on in which Doug Jones supporters are sending postcards to Alabama voters in support of Doug Jones. At a minimum this gets Doug Jones' name in front of the eyes of Alabamians and calls to their attention that fellow Alabamians support Doug Jones. This by itself is helpful in the campaign.

The tweeting being advocated by this blog could be simplified. The tweet could say simply, "I am voting for Doug Jones, and you should too." A link to a webpage might or might not be included.

Doug Jones tweeters would be instructed, "Just go find a Twitter account in your geographical area and send individual tweets to followers of that Twitter account. After you are done sending your batch of tweets, post a tweet on the #DougJonesforSenate hashtag that says, "I just sent individual tweets to __ followers of such and such Twitter account."

Further you might post a comment on this blog entry saying the same thing.

For example, say you live in or near Enterprise, Alabama. A follower list you could use for sending your individual tweets could be https://twitter.com/Enterprise_AL/followers. Take a look at that followers list, and see that you would probably want to be a little selective about which followers you send your tweets to.

This simpler method of tweeting gets Doug Jones' name in front of the eyes of Alabamians and calls to their attention that fellow Alabamians support Doug Jones. This should be worth doing in the campaign at this juncture.

The above is the first "Step Two" tweeting of which I have become aware.

The "Step Two" tweeting was ostensibly done by Blue Heron sending individual tweets to persons who had tweeted using a particular hashtag or hashtags, as opposed to sending individual tweets to persons who were followers of a third party Twitter account.

A word of caution if you go to a Twitter hashtag listing and send individual tweets to persons who show up under the hashtag: It may be better not to send your tweet to the person by means of using the reply button, but rather by right clicking on the person's Twitter name and sending your tweet as a "clean" new tweet to the person.

Measuring results
A person you tweet to may like or retweet your tweet, which you will see and which is a good result. This probably won't happen very much.

Also a person you tweet to may click on the link in your tweet and do a Step One tweet, in which case you will be able to see that person's Step One tweet on the #DougJonesforSenate hashtag. That too is a good result but that too is not likely to happen much.

The main measure of good results is whether my Blogger page view counter registers a page view, meaning the recipient of your tweet has clicked on the link. You can't see my Blogger page view counter, and only I can see it.

To provide information about whether tweet recipients are clicking on the link Step Two tweets that are sent, I am going to start posting at the bottoms of the tweeting bank pages the total numbers of page views. I will do this periodically, possibly daily, and I will include the date on which I have done the posting. I will leave in place posted information about page views from earlier dates so that how the cumulative number of page views is going up.

When I have done this tweeting, I have been able to see my page view counter go up as I am doing the tweeting. If you tell me you are doing tweeting, I may be able to watch the page view counter as you are doing your tweeting and let you know by DM or some other way.

Tweeting using cellphones

If you go to the Tweetsheet https://t.co/xERP3cRzi2, you will see the alternative tweet messages that participants may select to send in the Twitter Storm. All the tweet messages show the #DigDoug hashtag, so all the tweets that are sent in the Twitter Storm should show up under that hashtag. In addition, a participant's tweet in the Twitter Storm will show up on the Twitter feeds of the participant's followers. The Twitter Storm may have trending.

By looking on the #DigDoug hashtag tomorrow, you will be able to see how many participants send tweets in the Twitter Storm.

From that, you may try to judge for yourself how many Alabama voters will see tweets sent in the Twitter Storm, and who those Alabama voters are.

You might consider the extent to which the tweets in the Twitter Storm are seen only by like minded persons who already know who Doug Jones is, who already have an interest in Doug Jones, and/or who already favor Doug Jones.

You may conclude from considering the nature of the Twitter Storm that its reach to Alabama voters is limited, particularly to Alabama voters who don't know Doug Jones and whom you would like to reach with your tweet in order to try to persuade them to vote for Doug Jones.

Directed tweeting to AL voters
The goal of tweeting banks is the organized sending of individual tweets to as many Twitter accounts in Alabama as possible. There are probably a couple hundred thousand of those.

The tweets have links that contain pro-Doug Jones messaging. The links ask tweet recipients to join in the sending of tweets, seeking to create a pyramiding of tweets.

The main resource for finding Alabama Twitter addresses to tweet to are follower lists of Alabama Twitter accounts having lots of Alabama followers. Also hashtags, such as #RollTide, that are used by many Alabama tweeters can be availed of for finding Alabama Twitter accounts.

My experience is that I have had good success in sending directed tweets with links and the links getting clicked on.
In my tweeting banks, I say that 35 to 70 tweets can be efficiently sent in a half hour. (I think actually 3 or 4 can be sent in a minute. I have at times sent directed tweets as fast as 3 or 4 a minutes. I have not had a problem with Twitter temporarily stopping me from sending tweets.)

To have success, this tweeting effort needs Doug Jones tweeters who will tweet under Step Two of the tweeting banks. If you do the arithmetic, depending on how many Doug Jones tweeters do tweeting, and how much time they are willing to spend on tweeting, several hundred thousand could easily be sent to Alabama Twitter accounts before December 12th.

This organized tweeting effort for Doug Jones has been submitted to the campaign, but currently there has been no response from the campaign. See Social Media Director.

Some may view the tweeting as spam. The tweeting method has been submitted to Twitter. See Twitter@Support. I have been using the tweeting method for more than a year, and I have not had a problem with Twitter. I have sent tens of thousands of individually directed tweets, and the number of tweet recipients who have complained is probably less than 50.

I have used my blog page counter for evidence of whether tweet recipients click on links in the tweets. My page view counter has shown very good success in getting links in my tweets clicked on.

This tweeting effort needs Doug Jones tweeters who will send tweets under Step Two of the tweeting banks. While I have had lots of "likes" and "retweets" and a few tweeters who have done the tweet in Step One, I am not aware of any tweeters who are sending tweets in the critical Step Two.

N.B. For weeks I have been advocating that the Doug Jones campaign use tweeting banks to push out pro-Doug messaging to Alabama voters via Twitter.
Tweeting banks involve sending individually directed tweets to Alabama persons who have Twitter accounts. I suspect there are at least a couple hundred thousand Twitter accounts in Alabama. (While they presumably are not all in Alabama. Al.com, for example, has 269,000 followers).
Many Doug Jones tweeters have "liked" and "retweeted" the tweeting bank idea, but none have indicated they are willing to do the tweeting called for by a tweeting bank. I presented the idea to the Doug Jones campaign Social Media Director more than than three weeks ago, but I have heard nothing back from him.
The most recent poll I am aware of, reported October 31st, shows Doug Jones behind by 17 points. Poll: Moore up 17 points in Alabama Senate race. The campaign would seem to have a lot that it must overcome by December 12th. I have no idea what campaign strategizing is going on, but it would seem that all stops need to be pulled out by the campaign and its volunteers.
I strongly urge that the campaign get tweeting banks going.

Tweeting banks are for tweeting #DougJonesforSenate messaging to Alabamians having Twitter accounts. If you have your own ideas of messaging in support of Doug Jones, please draft the messaging you would like to see for a tweeting bank in this blog and submit it by email to rdshattuck@gmail.com. There is a good chance that any submission will be posted on this blog as a separate tweeting bank. The submission may be such that I am willing to put my own name on the blog entry. If you submit something and want your own name on the blog entry, that will be done. If I decide I am not willing to put my own name on your submission, it will be required that you be willing to have your name on the blog entry.

We who are tweeting to you believe Judge Roy Moore is appalling, and we are doing everything we can to get Doug Jones elected United States Senator from Alabama.

We want to spread the word in Alabama about Doug and get you to join in with us.

We are doing phone banking to ask people to attend Joe Biden's visit in Birmingham on Tuesday.

We can't call all the people we would like to.

Step Two

Send individual tweets to other Alabamians, which tweets have a link to this webpage. This will be to try to get recipients of tweets to come to this webpage, send their own tweet in Step One, and, after that, join in sending tweets to more Alabamans in this Step Two. The goal is to get a large number of "pyramiding" of tweets going to Alabama voters.

FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR TWEETING
A. General
This tweeting involves a non-standard use of Twitter, namely, the sending of large numbers of individually directed tweets to followers of other Twitter accounts (not your own followers).
A ground has been staked out with Twitter for this method of tweeting. See letter to Twitter @Support.


B. How to send your tweets efficiently from laptops
In doing your tweeting, you are repetitively sending the same tweet message. This can be done very efficiently, at least on a laptop computer. Get the tweet message on your mouse clipboard, go to the follower list  you are using for your tweeting, start with the first person on the list you want to tweet to, and do this:
1. Right click on person's Twitter name.
2. Choose "open in new tab"
3. Go to the new tab.
4. Click on the "Tweet to" button.
5. Paste the tweet message in the box.
6. Hit the "Tweet" button.
7. Close the tab, which takes you back to the list
8. Go on to next person, and repeat above steps.
You should be able to send 35 to 70 tweets in a half hour. Send as many tweets as you are willing to. Don't worry about any duplication that you think may arise.
